Maserati V4 Sport 16 Cylinder Zagato 1929
During the years of Free Formula racing cars, Alfieri Maserati built the V4 in 1929. The engine comprised two 8 cylinder 26B engine blocks with crankshaft in a 25° V-shape mounted on acommon crankcase. This engine with two carburettors and two Roots superchargers generated an output up to 305 hp. The V4 designation accounted for V engine and 4 Litres (3.961 cc) total capacity. One power unit ran clockwise so that the exhaust pipes could be affixed on bothy sides. In 1929 Baconin Boracchini drove the 16 cylinder V4 along an ordinary road near Cremona to set up a speed record over 10 km at 246 kph (153 mph).
The Maserati V4 also won the Grand Prix races in Tripoli in 1931 and Rome in 1932. The Maserati V4 presented at 2014 Villa d'Este Concorso d'Eleganza with chassis 4002 was styled with a sports car body by Zagato ordered by the owner at the time Riccardo Galeazzo, medical specialist taking care of the Pope.
This is the only example remaining today. A second two seater was produced, the V5 with a displacement of 4905 cc. This car presented by Lawrence Auriana from the U.S.A., won the Class Maserati 100 years at the 2014 Concorso Eleganzia Villa d'Este.
